This scholarship is awarded annually to a West Wilkes High School student pursuing higher education at a 4-year school. The Whittington Family wants to honor overcoming adversity, striving to reach goals and achieving greatness. This scholarship is awarded based off an essay entry and acceptance to a 4-year college or university. 

ABOUT THE FAMILY

Celebrating generations of West Wilkes High School alumni from the Whittington Family. This scholarship is given by Dennis (father), Ellie (daughter) and Jared (son) Whittington. 

Dennis Whittington
Class of 1976

Dennis is proud to come from generations of West Wilkes graduates. He has chosen to start this scholarship with his children in order to support aspiring students. Dennis also strives to honor his parents and brothers, all WWHS graduates, who have now passed. 

 

The Whittington family legacy runs deep through western Wilkes County. Dennis has been a long time donor and supporter of West Wilkes Athletics. 

 

Dennis was the owner and president of Trucksmart Transport (2003) and Trucksmart Insurance (1999). During this time, his company provided jobs to the community and supported the growth of Lowe’s Companies stores across America. 

 

Trucksmart won several awards including Small Business of the Year and Wilkes Chamber of Commerce Presidents Award. 

 

Dennis was a founding board member of Ebenezer Children’s home where he still volunteers to support local children in need. 

 

He is thankful for his children and their efforts to join him in giving back to West Wilkes. 

Ellie Whittington
Class of 2014

Ellie is a proud of her roots in the West West community and is passionate about giving back to the area. 

She is an alumni of Elon University ('18) and NC State University ('20). Ellie continues her career in sports having worked in MLB, NASCAR and covering three Olympic Games. She is an Emmy Winner from her work with NBC Sports during the 2020 Tokyo Games.

She thanks many of her teachers and mentors through her early education for believing in her from an early age. She advocates for those in rural areas to pursue higher education and to DREAM BIG! 

Jared Whittington
Class of 2022

Jared is grateful to be contributing to the future success of West Wilkes students. 

Jared is a currently in his last year obtaining a bachelor's degree in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ('25). He will be starting his career with Siemens Energy corporation in May.​
